If you are looking to spruce up your home office or workspace by adding some plant life to your desk, succulent plants are a wonderful choice to add some much-needed vibrancy to your day.

But don’t let these cute little plants fool you, they do require love and attention if you plan on keeping them alive! Don’t worry though, we have some tips for maintaining a healthy succulent for your desk.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUCCULENT

That’s right, don’t go into this endeavor thinking any succulent plant you find will make the perfect desk mate for your office. Some succulent plants depend on loads of light that typically is not found in indoor environments, which means it is best to avoid varieties that have vibrant colors such as reds, oranges, and purples. Stick with the succulents that are naturally green when making your selections for your indoor home office.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONTAINER

The most important thing to remember when selecting a container is that it has a drainage hole. As mentioned in our previous point, succulents do not like excess water and moist soil so having a container that allows water to drain is necessary. The more breathability and air circulation your plant container can provide for your succulent the happier it will be over time. Great news! All of the new planters that Photographer Supply Co offers have drainage holes!

3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOIL & DON’T FORGET TO FEED

Succulents need soil that will allow for drainage as they do not like moist soil. You want to avoid soil that retains moisture. Purchasing a fast draining cactus mix soil will be your best option for succulents. Once you have found the right soil don’t forget to feed your succulent with plant food. Don’t worry though this doesn’t have to be done often. Use fertilizer and Cactus/Succulent Food during the Spring and Summer months and only use half of what you would typically use for regular household plants.

4. DON’T FORGET TO WATER

Don’t forget that succulents need water to survive, but this doesn’t mean that succulents need to be watered daily. We recommend using the ‘soak and dry’ watering method for succulent plants. This means that you will want to soak the roots and allow them to dry out and water again once the soil has been dry for a few days. Not sure how to tell if the soil is dry? Simply stick your finger in about two knuckles deep to check how dry the soil is for the plant.

5. FIND THE LIGHT

Succulent plants NEED indirect sunlight. So if your home office is a dungeon a succulent plant may not be your first choice for sprucing up your desk. Your succulent is going to be desperate to find the light, so much so that you will notice its stems growing and pointing toward the light. Best practice would be to keep your succulent as close to a window that gets light coming through it all day. The brightest area of the room and desk will be the most ideal location for your succulent.
