What is your studio’s name? Lionlady Photography
Where is your studio based? Seattle, Washington
Studio Website? http://www.lionladyphoto.com
Are you currently a part-time or full-time photographer? Part-Time
What is your predominant photographic specialization? Weddings and Lifestyle
What camera(s) do you currently shoot with? Canon 5D Mark III + Pentax 645
How would you define your style?
My style is photo journalistic but I’m not afraid to be deliberate. Most of the time I let my clients do their thing and direct when I need to.
What motivated you to become a photographer?
Looking through family photos and realizing that stories wouldn’t be documented without the photographer. My mother took a ton of pictures of us as kids so I took it upon myself to be that person for my family. I’m addicted to nostalgia and started filming everything. Then, in high school, I enrolled in a dark room photography class and fell in love with the whole process. The craft leaned on both sides of my brain and the endless techniques inspired me to keep shooting.
What is it that you try to convey with your work?
Emotion and story. It sounds cliche but the best images make me wonder what happened right before the image was taken and what’s going to happen next.
How do you accomplish that?
I like to get my subjects moving as well as getting physically close to them. If they are still, I ask them to breath and be conscious of each other. Nature and the right light is also a huge element of my work.
Have you had a photographer inspire your work, and if so, who and why?
There are so many photographers that inspire me. With Instagram and many different social platforms, I’ve been able to connect with photographers all over the world and learn from them. Currently, the people I’m most inspired by are Tec Petaja, Robert J Hill, Amy Kiel, Andria Lindquist and Alice Gao.
What is your most memorable accomplishment so far in your photography career?
Definitely moving to Seattle and establishing relationships within the community here. I feel a part of one big team.
What is one thing you have learned during your career?
Two bits of advice: “Your next image could be the best image you’ve ever taken,” and “Take your camera everywhere.”
Which Photographer Supply Co. products do you currently use?
I currently use the engraved USB drives. I love that I can use my personal design for brand identity while using a quality product. And my clients love them!
