What camera(s) do you currently shoot with?
How would you define your style?
Building a personal relationship with my clients, is the initial building block to creating great and “real” work. While shooting it is a priority to see that my clients are comfortable, enjoying their day, and having fun. I focus on capturing and creating a well-rounded body of work for those that I am so honored to work with. Besides the “meat and potatoes” of what is expected I spare no effort to find those romantic moments, artistic wows, candid documentary story tellers, as well as portraiture. Over the years I have seen many fads come and go in the photographic world. I am staying steadfast in my efforts to produce the highest quality of work that stays fundamentally grounded in classicism.
What motivated you to become a photographer?
My intense passion for photography developed while studying Fine Arts at Texas A&M University-Commerce during the mid to late 90’s. I furthered my studies and interest while I studied abroad at the University of London – London, England. In 1999, I earned my Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree with a triple major in Photography, Painting, and Ceramic Sculpture.
As a husband to my wonderful wife Jenny, and as the proudest father to the most amazing son Aiden, I am inspired while photographing people in love. Seeing people through the process of a wedding and the days leading up to it reminds me often of how blessed I truly am.
What is it that you try to convey with your work?
I try to make the “realness” look as good as it possibly can. I want to capture peoples connections in a beautiful, romantic, and fun way. We all have different personalities and everyone connects in their own way. I want to find what people love about life and exploit that.
How do you accomplish that?
I feel like there is so much falseness in the “digital world” today, and I want to avoid that all together. You can make people look great without making them look fake and over edited. I set my clients at ease and push the photographic process to the back of their minds. I make the day about them, their connection, the moments, and the light. It is my aim to make my clients happy and hopefully, they’ll want to tell the world.
Have you had a photographer inspire your work, and if so, who and why?
All the originals through history that focused on the fundamentals of composition and light. The list is too long…
What is your most memorable accomplishment so far in your photography career?
There have been so many, but I would have to say it is all about me having this career and this life. Sometimes I can’t believe it… It astonishes me that even after my clients have paid me, that they overwhelmingly appreciate me and my efforts. People’s constant gratitude for what I do for them “floors” me! For me, the most memorable accomplishment is being so highly appreciated and graciously respected by all of the people that trusted me with their most important of days…
What is one important lesson you have learned during your career?
I taught art and photography for 16 years. Building my business while teaching presented its own set of challenges and actually became very unhealthy at one point. I had so much drive and never turned the photography work away. Work stacked up, and something had to give… For five years I gave up sleep and family time. In 2014, I realized I had to stop spreading myself so thin, and left teaching for good. I haven’t looked back, the company is thriving, and I take even greater care of my amazing clients! I have more quality time with my family that I love so much, and still get to appreciate my career and the people I get to work with…
