Name: Ashley Benham
Business Name: Ashley Benham Photography
Where are you based out of? Memphis, Tennessee
Are you currently a part-time or full-time photographer?
Technically still part-time because I do have a day job, but it is doing photography as well.
What is your predominant photographic specialization?
Weddings & engagements
What camera(s) do you currently shoot with?
Nikon D750 x2
How would you define your style?
My style is bold, colorful, contrasty, and eclectic!
What motivated you to become a photographer?
I was accepted onto the yearbook staff my freshman year of high school and I found my passion for photography and documenting humans and human connection.
What is it that you try to convey with your work?
I try to make human chemistry very evident in my work. I love telling people’s love story by how they interact with one another.
How do you accomplish that?
I make all my couples super comfortable and love shooting the “in between” moments the most. I’ll have my couples do silly challenges like walk as if they were in a three-legged race together, and it’s those laughs and those goofy moments that I love to capture the most.
What do you do during a session or wedding day to help make your clients feel comfortable?
You’re not gonna believe it, but I bring some Fireball to all my sessions and weddings. I always have it on hand for my couples just in case they want a little liquid courage, cause I know how scary it can be to be in front of the camera (which is why I never am!). But aside from that, I become friends with pretty much all my couples, so it’s almost like I’m a pal just documenting their time together like a fly on the wall. I’ve had many couples that helps because I treat them as friends, not just the “client.”
Have you had a photographer inspire your work, and if so, who and why?
So many! Currently, I’m super into following Eden Strader and her work. It’s so effortless and bold.
What is your most memorable accomplishment so far in your photography career?
Last year I had a styled wedding that was Halloween inspired published on Rock N Roll Bride and that’s probably been the highlight of my career thus far!
What is one important lesson you have learned during your career?
I’ve learned many lessons throughout my photography journey, but one thing that I’ve learned to do the most is laugh at the things that are out of my control, and that could apply to everyone, especially brides! Anything can go wrong on the wedding day (and trust me, there is always SOMETHING that doesn’t go according to plan!), so I’ve learned to roll with the punches and go with the flow and laugh it off cause sometimes if you don’t, you’ll go crazy!
Which Photographer Supply Company products do you currently use?
I use the wooden boxes and the chubby wooden USBs!
How have Photographer Supply Company products helped your business?
They really elevate my client experience and allow me to give my clients something handcrafted to keep their loose prints in. All my couples love receiving these boxes because they are always unexpected!
How has packaging elevated your brand?
Packaging has really elevated my brand because brand awareness is everything! My brand is quirky and alternative, so having these products that I can deliver to my clients with my branding on them definitely takes my business to the next level!
