What is your predominant photographic specialization?    Weddings

What camera(s) do you currently shoot with?    Nikon D750 and Nikon D800

How would you define your style?

My style is romantic, authentic and classic. My work has a light and airy feel, but I also love some drama and shadow! My overall look is elegant and natural, with an emphasis on real interactions and movement.

What motivated you to become a photographer?

When I took my first black-and-white film photography class at an art museum in my twenties, I was hooked! I worked for years as a photojournalist and writer for newspapers in three states. I photographed my first wedding a few years ago, and I fell in love with it. Weddings are a beautiful mix of storytelling, portraiture and event coverage, which is perfect for my photojournalist background and love of storytelling.

What is it that you try to convey with your work?

I try to convey the true personalities of my couples and the whole story of their wedding day – not just the highlights. I photograph the wedding party running to get out of the rain, or the flower girl asleep in her mother’s lap at the end of the reception. I absolutely photograph the big, important events, but the smaller, behind-the-scenes moments are sometimes the ones that bring back the deeper memories of the day.

How do you accomplish that?

I accomplish this by anticipating what’s about to happen, and also by looking beyond the obvious. This comes in part from my photojournalist training, and also from just being a storyteller at heart. Another important way I accomplish this is by always having a second photographer. Wedding days are unpredictable, and timelines don’t always work out perfectly. Having a second photographer allows me to provide complete coverage and to have time to capture more behind-the-scenes moments.

Have you had a photographer inspire your work, and if so, who and why?

Yes! The biggest inspiration to my work is Jean Smith, who is an amazing wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Michigan. She is a master of light and shadow, and her work is so full of feeling, originality, and movement. I love the way she tells a story with light and her choice of lenses. I always feel something when I look at her images, which is what I hope to bring to my own work as well!

What is your most memorable accomplishment so far in your photography career?

My most memorable accomplishment is photographing a couples’ wedding day and having them tell me that they still cry happy tears when looking back at their pictures because the photos bring back the memories and emotion of the day. While I have received an award at a conference for my wedding photography, the highest honor is making my clients happy and capturing their family history in a beautiful way. That is my goal.

What is one thing you have learned during your career?

I’ve learned to always keep working to learn and improve my craft in some way, every day. When I’m editing photos, I’m usually listening to podcasts or online photo education – I’m definitely an online workshop junkie! I also attend at least one photography conference in person each year because I find them so inspiring. Doing personal work is also something I’m passionate about, and I think it’s so important to photograph things just for fun, whether it’s my children, a portrait series, or a styled shoot. I’m currently working on a portrait series about strong women in my community – something I’m doing just as a personal project.

Which Photographer Supply Company products do you currently use?

I currently use the gray linen USB box with a 5×5 photo window and ribbon closure. It’s so elegant, and I love how I can include a personal touch with a photo from their wedding.

How have Photographer Supply Company products helped your business?

When my couples receive their linen storage box, they rave about how beautiful and functional it is! I love that they have a safe and stylish place to store their USB, and the 5×5 space for a wedding photo is a nice personal touch that helps emphasize the importance of printed photos. My couples always receive printed products in addition to their digital files. 🙂
